Claire Nevinson, Boots Superintendent Pharmacist, has shared what you need to know about the perimenopause to answer any concerns and help raise awareness amongst women:
What is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?
“Menopause is when your periods stop due to lower hormone levels. Perimenopause is the stage when you can have signs and symptoms of menopause, but your periods have not stopped. Perimenopause ends and you reach menopause when you have not had a period for 12 months.”
How do I know if I’m perimenopausal?
“Each woman can have a very different experience. Some will suffer from multiple signs and symptoms and some none, and this is completely normal. The first sign of the perimenopause is usually, but not always, a change in the normal pattern of your periods or irregular periods.”
What common signs and symptoms should I look out for?
“The first sign is usually, but not always, a change in the normal pattern of your periods or irregular periods. Other common signs and symptoms can include anxiety, mood swings, hot flushes, brain fog and vaginal dryness.
When is this phase expected?
''Perimenopause and menopause are a natural part in a women’s life course and usually occur between the ages of 45 – 55, as a women’s oestrogen levels drop, although it can start earlier or later for some women.”
How long does the perimenopause last?
“Some women may notice symptoms of the menopause months or even years before their periods come to an end, and this transitional phase dictates the duration of the perimenopause-which can be different for everyone”
What can I do to help ease symptoms?
“Eating well, exercising, having a good sleep hygiene and looking after your mental wellbeing can all help with signs and symptoms during perimenopause. Your Boots pharmacist can also advise on the products and services best suited to your needs, based on the symptoms you may be experiencing.”
