Boots Online Doctor wellness coach shares tips for sticking to 2025 goals

  • Fewer than one in ten Brits stick to their new year’s resolutions all year round
  • Boots Online Doctor Nutritionist and Wellness GP, shares top tips to help people maintain their new year’s resolutions throughout the year

January 2025: Many see January as the perfect time to make new lifestyle resolutions with losing weight, keeping fit and eating healthy being the most popular.1 However, maintaining these throughout the year can be difficult, with 20% of people breaking resolutions before January is over and fewer than one in 10 keeping resolutions all year round.2

To help people stick to these popular new year goals, Ruth Taylor, wellness coach, nutritionist and nurse at Boots Online Doctor shares her top three tips.

Set achievable goals

“The first step is to make sure your goal is realistic and achievable. If it’s not, try breaking it down into bitesize steps. For example, if your resolution is focused on keeping fit, do something that you’ll enjoy and that fits into your schedule.

“The NHS recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week. Try spreading these throughout the week, for example 30-minute brisk walk five days a week will help you reach your goal.

“Speak to your GP before starting any new forms of exercise if you have not exercised in a while or have an existing medical condition. If you find 30 minutes too long you can break it down into three -ten-minute slots - aiming to build these up as your fitness improves.

Plan ahead

“Preparation is key for maintaining new habits. For example, eating healthier becomes much more challenging if you don’t have a clear picture of what you’re going to eat during the week.

“Creating meal plans and prioritising nutritious meals can stop you from slipping into unhealthy habits. When meal planning, aim to add in a range of high fibre foods such as vegetables, lentils, chickpeas or beans, which can be a great addition for healthier meals.

“More information on nutrition and healthy eating can be found on the Boots Health Hub. The Boots Online Doctor Coach app* can also help you build healthy habits for long-term sustainable weight management and lasting-lifestyle changes, including advice on nutrition that suits you.

Habit stack

“It can take time to build a habit, anywhere from 21 days to a year. Habit stacking is the act of finding something you do every day and attaching your new habit to this. This is a great way to include a new activity into daily routines. For example, if you’re trying to get fitter and are a regular morning coffee drinker, you could do a five-minute stretch routine while you wait for the kettle to boil.
