  • Boots pharmacists are now able to supply free emergency hormonal contraception, also known as the morning after pill, under the expansion of the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service

  • The expansion of the service will allow convenient access to essential women’s healthcare across Boots pharmacies in England

  • Boots Superintendent Pharmacist says the expansion of the service is a significant step for women’s health

With the expansion of the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, Boots pharmacists across England are now able to provide women with convenient access to free emergency hormonal contraception, without the need for a GP or clinic appointment and marks an important step for women’s healthcare.

During a private consultation, women will be asked a number of health-related questions by a Boots pharmacist, who will then advise on the most suitable emergency hormonal contraception option. If the supply of these medicines is not appropriate, they can signpost to a GP for further support.

Claire Nevinson, Superintendent Pharmacist at Boots, said: “Expansion of the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, to provide access to emergency hormonal contraception through community pharmacies, is a significant step in ensuring women have access to the healthcare they need when they need it. Women can visit their local Boots pharmacist as a first port of call for access to free contraception advice, support and medication, without the need for a GP or clinic appointment.”

Emergency contraception can help prevent unwanted pregnancy after unprotected sex, or if regular contraception has been compromised. Patients should use emergency contraception within three to five days of having unprotected sex and the sooner it’s used, the more effective it can be.

Boots pharmacists across England can also offer holistic sexual health and family planning advice to women, including finding the right method of contraception. The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service* now provides easy access to free regular oral hormonal contraception and emergency hormonal contraception. For more information, visit Boots Health Hub.
