Patients that have a long-term health condition, like diabetes, high blood pressure or asthma, are likely to have a repeat prescription from their GP for their regular medication. Repeat prescriptions allow patients to order medication from pharmacies without having to book an appointment with their GP every time they need more.
Ordering NHS repeat prescriptions at Boots
In person
After signing up for their pharmacy's repeat prescription service, patients can physically hand in the white slip from their repeat prescription at their GP or at the pharmacy. This slip, sometimes called the repeat re-order form, shows the list of prescribed medicines a patient may order. The patient simply ticks the items they need to re-order.
By phone
Depending on where a patient lives, they may be able to order their repeat prescription by phone. In some parts of the UK there are services, like the Prescription Medicine Ordering Line (MOL) and Prescription Ordering Direct (POD).
Online
Often, the easiest way for patients to manage repeat prescriptions is online. The Boots Free Online NHS Repeat Prescription Service* allows patients to order their prescriptions online or via the Boots app
By Post
Patients can tick the items on their repeat re-order slip and send this off by post to either to their GP surgery or to their nominated Boots pharmacy.
Receiving repeat prescriptions
If a patient’s prescription is collected from the pharmacy and they have nominated Boots as their chosen pharmacy, they can sign up to the Boots free Text Message Service. No more waiting around for their prescription to be ready - instead, their Boots pharmacy will send them a text message to let them know when their medicated is ready to collect.
Patients can also receive home delivery by ordering online using the Free Online NHS Repeat Prescription Service, which gives customers in England the option to have their medicine delivered to their home.
Patients can also use our in-store Prescription Delivery Service. We offer a free home delivery service for many of our vulnerable patients (in line with government and NHS guidance) funded by the NHS. Patients can talk to our pharmacy teams if they think this applies to them. e can also deliver to patients who don’t fall into this category for just £55 a year or £5 for each one-off delivery.
*Participating surgeries only. NHS prescription charges may apply.
**At participating Boots pharmacies only.
***Please note the repeat prescription free home delivery service is only available to patients registered with a GP in England. However, the option to collect in store is available for all customers registered with a participating GP anywhere in the UK.
**** Fridge lines and controlled drugs cannot be delivered via the online service
