COVID-19: Boots UK update on stores

08 April 2020

Boots UK’s priority is to support the NHS, ensure access to a pharmacy for every community, and look after our amazing and selfless colleagues as they serve on the front line to support our patients and customers.

The locations where people need Boots have changed fundamentally in the last few weeks. For example; airport stores and central London stores near offices have very few people visiting them, while local community pharmacies are seeing more than double the number of people requiring prescriptions. We need to make sure that we have enough colleagues playing their vital role where it’s currently most needed and that we can send home those colleagues who are working in stores that are not busy. To achieve this, we are temporarily closing a small number of stores that are very quiet at this time.

As with other front-line healthcare workers in the NHS, we have seen higher absence recently, and have therefore asked our pharmacy, healthcare, and store management colleagues working in quieter stores to help our teams in nearby busy pharmacies, or, where this is either not needed or not possible, to stay safe at home.

There are over 2,400 Boots stores across the UK; we will temporarily close around 60 stores by next Wednesday 15 April 2020. The closing stores are typically in city centre or shopping centre locations and are usually within a few minutes’ walk to the next closest Boots pharmacy. Customers will be able locate their nearest stores by visiting Boots.com.

A spokesperson for Boots UK said:

“All over the country, we are working tirelessly to support the NHS and to provide our customers with the advice, healthcare, medicine and products that they need. We are committed to being there for the people that need us and we will not leave a community without a pharmacy. We would like to thank our colleagues for their work and our customers for their support and generosity.”

Our senior pharmacy team, including our Chief Pharmacist, Marc Donovan, also issue daily advice vlogs which can be seen here.

Further detail

From Thursday evening, 25 London stores will temporarily close, with a further 35 UK wide stores due to close on the evening of Tuesday 14th April. All customers, and any prescription services, will be directed to the nearest alternative Boots, which in most cases is a short walk away. The full list of closing stores, together with the nearest alternative store can be found below.

Any customers who have existing deliveries or prescriptions to collect at any of the affected stores, will be contacted over the course of the next few days. We will update them on the best way to manage their prescriptions moving forward, including details of the nearest alternative Boots pharmacy. Customers can also find out further information about store locations and opening times on Boots.com.
