Walgreens Boots Alliance launches 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

27 February 2017

Walgreens Boots Alliance launched its annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report with an event in Washington, D.C. on 27 February. Hosted by Ornella Barra (co-Chief Operating Officer and Leader of CSR) and Richard Ellis (Vice President, CSR), the event was well-attended by political officials, our external CSR partners and other top CSR leaders.

The report, which can be viewed online, here, details many of the ways in which WBA has embedded CSR into the businesses across our enterprise in four key areas: Community, Environment, Marketplace, and Workplace. It also describes some of the specific initiatives we’ve participated in to benefit people and the environment in communities where we operate. Finally, this report marks the first year that our combined company gathered global CSR data, which was independently assured by Deloitte and will serve as a baseline for evaluating our progress going forward.

In addition to reporting on our CSR commitments – which have been developed to meet the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals – the report also highlights some of the work undertaken at the country level.

The report includes several examples of Boots UK’s initiatives in CSR, including our work to reduce energy use and our innovative EnergyCare programme, our long-term partnership with BBC Children in Need, which has raised more than $14 million over 12 years, and our new healthcare apprenticeship program designed to generate excitement about careers in community pharmacy.

Stefano Pessina (Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Walgreens Boots Alliance) and James Skinner (Executive Chairman, Walgreens Boots Alliance) recognized our colleagues for their work in this important area, saying “through proactive support of our colleagues’ personal health and wellbeing and by providing equal opportunities for everyone, we are building a culture of looking after our people. This means that we are even more engaged to better serve our customers.”

Ornella Barra echoed this, saying “from my heart, I want to take this opportunity to thank our employees, suppliers and partners for showing they care, by supporting and delivering a CSR program that makes us proud.”
